How we check these rates

Every week we read the savings account rate page of about 20 Canadian banks and credit unions. We rank only the regular rate a new customer gets with no conditions, at a $10,000 balance. Rates that need a direct deposit, a chequing account or a minimum relationship balance, and limited-time promotions, are covered in each update, where we also work out what a promotion pays over a full year. Rankings are by rate only; no bank pays to be listed.

HISA rate FAQs

Who has the best HISA rate in Canada right now?

Online banks and credit unions pay the highest regular savings rates, far above the Big Six banks. The leader changes from time to time; each weekly update lists the current top rates.

Is a HISA rate fixed?

No. A high-interest savings account pays a variable rate that the bank can change at any time, and the new rate applies to your whole balance. If you want a rate locked in for a set term, a GIC does that.

Are 5% savings promotions worth it?

Often less than they look. A promotional rate usually lasts a few months and then drops to the regular rate, so the return over a full year can be lower than a bank that simply pays a good regular rate. Our updates show the full-year figure for each promotion.
