How we check these rates

Every week we read the GIC rate page of over 20 Canadian banks and credit unions, from online banks such as Oaken, EQ Bank and Saven to the Big Six. We record every rate the bank shows and rank the standard rates by term: Canadian-dollar, non-registered, non-redeemable GICs. Limited-time specials are listed separately in each update, with their conditions. Rankings are by rate only; no bank pays to be listed.

GIC rate FAQs

Who has the best GIC rates in Canada right now?

Online banks and credit unions pay the highest standard GIC rates, well above the Big Six banks. The leader for each term changes from week to week; each weekly update lists the current top three for every term.

Are online bank GICs safe?

GICs at CDIC member banks are insured up to $100,000 per insured category, and credit union deposits are covered by a provincial deposit insurer. A higher rate does not mean a riskier deposit.

How often do GIC rates change?

Some banks change their GIC rates several times a month, others only every few months. That is why we check every week and date every update.
