What changed

Compared with our October 29 check: Manulife raised its Advantage Account from 1.50% to 1.65% and its Tax-Free Advantage Account from 1.05% to 1.10%; TD raised ePremium Savings from 0.45% to 0.55% and the standard Growth Savings rate from 0.40% to 0.50%; National Bank raised its High Interest Savings Account from 0.55% to 0.65%; Innovation Credit Union raised its Savings Account from 0.60% to 0.70%; and CIBC raised its eAdvantage new-account special from 4.60% to 5.00%. Manulife’s personal 3.00% promotion, open to new accounts until October 30, is no longer shown. Saven, Oaken, Hubert, Achieva, EQ Bank, Tangerine, Simplii, RBC and Scotiabank did not change.

Our take

On $10,000 kept for a year, WealthONE’s 3.00% pays about $300, Saven’s 2.85% about $285, Manulife’s new 1.65% about $165 and the best Big Six rate, 0.65%, about $65. WealthONE’s account terms say the tier rate applies to the whole closing balance, so a balance of $25,000 or more earns 3.25% on every dollar.

The big promotional numbers still lose over a year. Tangerine’s 5.00% for five months works out to about 2.27% in a registered account, BMO’s 5.00% for four months to about 1.95%, and CIBC’s new 5.00% for three months to about 1.46%. All three are below the regular rates at WealthONE, Saven and Oaken. WealthONE is a CDIC member and is not offered in Quebec.
